and yeah, my dad put 87 octance in my 240SX one time, and it was a very noticable difference. i put 91 in it.
Are you sure it's really noticable or is it just your imagination? I've did this test before as well and I don't notice any difference, it was in my old 200SX. Let assume that your 240SX does get more HP on 91, it can't increase no more than 10HP to the crank which is about 8 WHP. The weather alone can change your HP much more drastically than that.

About the auto advancing the timing, unless I see some proof, I'm still skeptical. How can the ECU automatically sense the octain of the gas? I don't think the car really sense that you're pouring lesser octain. I think the knock sensor automatically retard the timing due to lower octain but I don't think it really knows what octain is in there. If the engine start pinging, the knock sensor would just retard the timing to a default safe level.

About this quote "although Accord's will jump 10 horsepower or so on premium, V-6's chief engineer says". If this is the case, then why don't they just rate the car @ 250HP then? I can't believe you guys believe this w/out a doubt and yet complain that the 5HP from the Altima is magical. How can this engineer say this with such certainty when the quality of gas varies between the different gas company? Also, premium in some part is 93 octain and others is 91 octain, which one is he referring to? Now you know why I'm skeptical?

Altima was already getting 240hp with premium. I'm not going to get into the contreversy about the Altima's extra 5hp. Premium is typically 93 octane. Mid grade is 91 octane. Regular is typically 87.

But I gotta say, 240hp running on regular unleaded is . Compare that to Camry's 192hp (now 210hp) and Altima's 240hp, but need premium fuel for those optimal amount of power. IMO, it's more impressive advertise 240hp running on regular gas than 245hp (or 192hp (now 210hp)) on more expensive premium gas. Remember, Honda puts more emphasis on value.

I don't know where you live, but in California, you can't get 93 octane gas. Premium for us is 91, Mid grade is 89 and regular is 87.

You're right. It's the same here. I just remember its 2 increments up in octane for reg/mid/premium. Prices are typically $0.10/g for each step up. Premium is typically $0.20/g more than regular.

We have 87, 89, 93 and 94 octane here (94 octane costs $0.34 extra a gallon than 93  )

A ECU can advance timing if it is programed to. Check this site out for the Noen Race AFX ECU www.afxmfg.com . But for an engineer to come out and say that is petty. The Altima did gain power. There was a dyno done between a 2002 and a 2003 model, and at the wheels the 2003 model had 7 more hp, not 5, but 7.(same dyno)

I think in that article the Honda engineer claimed the Accord was faster than the Altima, which hasn't been proved true as of yet.
