there is a chance that they might use the new 3.6L unit used in the Q7 with 280hp and 266 ft-lbs in the near future.

That's pretty disappointing considering what the last version R32 accomplished. It wasn't faster than the WRX, but it was pretty close.
This one has just got blown out of the water. The only reason I would buy it is due to the AWD drivertrain, which you can't get in the GTi. The GTi alone with easy mods can smoke this overpriced behemoth.
It needs something closer to ~280 hp / 260 lb ft torque to compete with the WRX.

My thoughts exactly.
There is absolutely no reason for a hatch the size of the Mk5 to weigh more than 2600lbs.
Hell, anything over a ton is excessive IMO.
God forbid we focus on making safer drivers. :a:

I've never driven a DSG, but the idea doesn't appeal to me. If I want a manual, I'll buy a manual. If I want an auto, same thing.
What DOES impress me is true seamless-shift technology, as in F1. These are single-clutch setups that have shift times of virtually 0ms (at least the gearboxes that Toyota and Williams will be using in 2007). Maybe they'll be able to implement something close to that in road cars some years from now...
But I never liked the R32. Always struck me as a fat, expensive Golf that didn't really have anything special over a WRX wagon.
