New BMW 335 sedan to hit dealers...

When this BMW 3.0L make 215HP, the power output level comparable to other 2.5L engine, they call it 325i.
When this MB 1.8L make 192HP, the power output level comparable to other 2.3L engine, they call it C230K.
Engine power output level, not acual output horsepower number.

Can you please give me a more logical explanation?
Other example:
540i (4.4L, 290HP)
545i (4.4L, 325HP)
C240 (2.6L, 168HP)
S550 (5.5L, 382HP)
S600 (5.5L, 510HP)

jeez guys, let up a little. While it's not EXACT it is usually a rough equivalent. It used to be just like go2turbo described. Only recently, like within the past 5-6 years, that the german manufacturers have started deviating significantly from having the exact dispalcement in the moniker.

you have it right. BMW USA also explained the new naming scheme and they said it will reflect the power output not the actual displacement. with number of turbo power plants they have planned, it makes sense.

the numbers have always been very close to the actual engine displacement. if they didn't match perfectly, they were off by .1 or .2 liters at most. it's only recently that they've started to deviate more than that. if there's a more up to date explanation directly from BMW itself, I'd love to see it.

you say "BMW 3.0L make 215HP, the power output level comparable to other 2.5L engine". WHAT other 2.5L engine is this power output level comparable to?? that just doesn't make any sense. the numbers match the displacement much more closely than they do any power number.
no, he's saying the numbers don't indicate displacement whatsoever.

kinda like the lexus 430h (V6 with the performance of a 430), I know it's pretty gay. they really should follow the nomenclature and let the performance speak for itself.

330i (3.0L, 255HP)
How do you name a 3.0L, 215HP, 3 Series BMW?
329½i?

It's 450h (3.5 v6 + electric). It really is faster than current V8, I raced one with my 430 and lost miserably
