Default 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8

The Dodge Magnum may have revived the station wagon in American minds, and its chopped and channelled look sets a tone for hard-edged performance. But until now, the Magnum has had to wait while the Chrysler 300C SRT-8 sedan has stolen all the big HEMI-charged performance thunder. All that changes when Chrysler shows off the Dodge Magnum SRT-8 at the L.A. Auto Show.

Last summer, Trevor Creed, Chrysler's vice president of design, said that the Magnum begged for a lot of power and SRT handling. It gets it in the form of the 6.1-liter HEMI, a version of the 5.7-liter engine that sports 85 more horsepower than the "base" HEMI. Chrysler gets the extra power by boosting displacement, increasing the compression ratio, redesigning the cylinder head and the intake and exhaust systems, and allowing higher revs. The 6.1-liter HEMI has 425 hp at 6000 rpm, with 420 lb-ft of torque at 4800 rpm.

The new V-8 works together with a five-speed automatic transmission with a specially calibrated AutoStick, while a heavy-duty prop shaft channels torque to an upgraded differential and axles.
The SRT8 should be able to do 0-60 runs in just 5 seconds and 60-0 mph braking in approximately 110 feet. Quarter-mile times are estimated in the high 13-second range.

For performance handling, engineers adjusted the Magnum's spring rates and suspension bushings and installed large-diameter anti-sway bars. The ride height has been lowered half an inch and the ESP system has been specially tuned for performance handling.

Also new are the 20-inch forged aluminum wheels that are equipped with Goodyear F1 three-season tires, 245/45 in the front and 255/45 in the rear.

Braking is provided by a Brembo system with four pistons per caliper and large vented rotors fore and aft.

The exterior of the performance wagon has been adjusted with a new front fascia for more cooling of the engine bay and the brakes. A front air dam reduces lift, while there is an all-new fascia in the rear with an integrated wake modifier and aggressive cutouts to accommodate the dual 3.5-inch exhaust tips. The grille of the SRT-8 is painted in body color with chrome trim and there are satin-finish front and rear bumper inserts, body-color mirrors and door handles, and, of course, SRT badging.

The interior is equipped with power-adjustable sport seats with suede inserts. The steering wheel is covered with leather trim in carbon fiber look and the center stack has special carbon fiber finishing. The instrument panel includes a 180-mph speedometer.

The 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8 comes standard with AM/FM radio with six-disc CD changer, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, a power-adjustable pedal cluster and rear cargo net. It will arrive in the Dodge showrooms in the fall.

Looks nice. I hope that this car and the 300C SRT-8 have LSD rear ends.
