i have a 99 gs-r with 79,000 miles and i'm usually down 1/2 qt everytime i go to get my oil changed (every 3k miles)...but 1qt every 2k is pretty high, hope you can fix it.

No, you can run a multitude of different weights. The idea is to run an oil weight which works well the temperate range your car runs in. On the track I run 10w40 for example.
5w30 just happens to be the catch all oil weight which works well in a large range of temps.
