if you are selling your car to another person, how does this title thing work, the title is not under my name but my dads name, and he is not living with me, so can i still sell the car? what do i need to do? help please, can i forge his name?

 

YOUR dad has to take the title to a notary place to sign the car off to your friend.

all he needs is your friends name, address, and phone number. then the title gets mailed (after processing) to your friend. he then signs, sends it back out, and he'll get it 3 months later.

Do you have posession of the title? The lienholder holds the titles in some states and other states have converted to electronic titles (ie Arizona)

If there is a lien on the vehicle you must have a lien release from the finance co/bank.

You will not be able to sign for your dad with a notary present. He will have to sign off on the title.

 

In some states you don`t have to have a notary witness the title signing. If you live in a state that does not require this then just sign his name.

 

I'm currently in a similar situation where a former family friend is refusing to sign the title because of a recent argument. I've paid the vehicle off for quite some time now and want to remove his name before anything else happens. Would I just be able to sign his name if I live in California? Would my family friend be contacted by the DMV once i send the title in to have their name removed? Thanks for all your help.

 

In the state of VA, if by a 1/50 chance you happen to be here:

Your father has to sign it. Period, end of story... legally.

If you call him up and ask him, he may let you forge it without fear of repercussion... even though that is still illegal.

If you want to sell it without him knowing, you'd be in a legal world of sh*t when he finds out.
