I could imagine no possible situation that would cause the entire rear window to spiderweb like that. Well, maybe beating it with a bat for a few hours... but that's not even wrinkled. Weird.

the window shatters because it is designed to do that. Having millions of little pieces of glass is safer than having large shards of glass flying around in an accident.
You can find tempered glass like this in vending machines for similar reasons.
