GS or GS-R
I'm buying a 1998 GS or GS-R this weekend, but i'm not sure which type it is. What is the easiest way to find this out? Does the owners manual say? Havent taken a look at it yet so i'm not too sure, and the previous owner Removed the all the writing off of it so i cant tell that way either. Any info would be appreciated.
So far all i know is its 1.8litre DOHC for the engine if that makes any difference at all.

um....i hope you know that gs and gsr are big difference. b18c engine is what your looking for. and the redline is at 8 on gsr....u want it to be a gsr if your going for speed, not if you want low insurance tho
Thanks for the info guys, i'm really hoping its a GSR, but if its not i'll prolly do an engine swap and throw in a B18.
Also can you get a GSR in a 4 door? Cuz the one i'm looking at is a 4 door.

The difference between the two is a big one and is a big price difference as well. Sounds like you could get hosed on the deal since you don't know what your looking at. I would bring someone along w/ you that knows more about cars so you don't get taken for a ride
Engine Swap? If it is a GS, then it already comes with a b18, just its a b18b.
The GS-R is a B18C1 DOHC Vtec. You are looking at about 2,500 to 3,000 for the motor + Labor for the swap. Mite as well spend an extra grand and get the GS-R if you are going to plan to swap anyways. Or a cheaper way is to do a b16 vtec head on your b18b if you got the gs.

both engines are b18. the GS is a b18b, the GS-R is a b18c. you can check the stamp that is on the block. it should be right next to the header.
both GS and GS-R can come in 4 door models. all US GS-R come in 5 speed manuals.
the most accurate way to tell is by looking at the VIN like RB said. or you can look at the intake manifold. the GSR intake manifold curves like a lowercase "n" shape. while the GS intake manifold curves like a "U" shape.
then there is always the signs of vtec. like the obvious writing on the valve cover.

thats a b18c (GS-R) you can tell by how the intake manifold in the back curves down like a "n" as opposed to curving up like an "u"
