Default Test Pipe vs. Cat?

Many guys on here talk about carsound cats and such, as a good way to complete an exhaust system. I was just wondering how a test pipe would compare to that in sound and performance. How much are they and where can you get them?

Performance is almost the same. Just a little more restrictive on the carsound cats but nothing thats going to break you plus you're keeping our air clean. With my carsound cat on I actually noticed a deeper sound.

A test pipe gives a very very raspy sound to the exhaust, and you don't gain much power over a high flow cat. The cat will make the exhaust sound much deeper, as Etylorcen said.
