Default Hatch question

So I know the 98-01 hatches use the little lever thingie on the outside where the 94-97s do not. Are the two backwards-compatible or not? Now I know some of your thinking "Sleeper, you shoulda done your research...", but I know since they bolt up, all I would need to retrofit a 94-97 hatch on my car would be the latch, no?

TIA,

Aside from the lever, they are the same.
