Default Insurance Question

Ok I'm 19 right now and about to get an integra.

I understand that you can save a lot of money by putting your name under your parent's insurance or something? Can you explain in detail how this exactly works?

And if I do put my name under my parent's insurance, will I be able to use the "good student" discount or do I have to have my own insurance to do that?

well to put your name under your parents insurance you would have to ask them to put you under their policy...just ask them they should know what you mean...and to your second question you can have the good student discount whether you are under your parents policy or not

Put your parents as the primary driver of the car.

Depends on the insurance company and depends on which state you live in. Call & ask. We called ours & the agent told us how to list drivers vs. cars to get the best deal. He doesn't want to lose your whole family as customers.

But if there's a car for each driver, they probably will not let you get away with NOT being listed as primary driver on some car. A friend said his insurance made them list his teenage daughter as primary driver on the most expensive car in the household. Didn't matter who was the registered owner. (They're shopping for new insurance...)

very true, insurance varies on all of these things as well as insurance company that you deal with, plus if your parents insure the house and such under the plan as well rates will be less. Just call and ask. You will not get an acurrate total for you since all these factors will be different.

It would be in your best interest to have the car in your parent's name and you be a driver until you hit 21.

Unless you don't mind the $$

Just another thought from the other side of it... since I've got teenage kids.

If you are stupid enough to hurt someone with your car, and get sued for more than your insurance is worth, your parents could lose their home & lots more. They may want you on a separate policy to protect themselves from that. OTOH, some states laws are set up so that doesn't protect them anyway.

Like I said, each state has different laws & each insurance company has different ways of doing business.

hey thanks for all your opinions but only 1 person answered my 2nd question, which is "will I be able to use the good student discount if the insurance is under my parent's name?"

You'd have to call and ask.
