Default Synthetic Oil

Hi I'm new to the forums and actually new to Integras. I've had my 1999 LS a few months and it has 91,000 miles (alot I know) and I don't know what kind of oil the first owner was using, should I bother switching to Synthetic or is it too risky? Thanks.

damn thats nice to know someone has higher miles than i do...but i have a 2000, and i have 77k.

Just do an oil change on your own time, whatever you choose to do, i would use an oil flush of some sort, and i would pour about a half quart of whatever the new stuff you're adding while the drain plug is still open, to get any additional remnants of the old oil out.

Personally, I would just stick to non syn, 10w30, since you have a higher mileage motor. Keep an eye on your dipstick every 500 miles or so, especially since you just got the car, just in case you're burning oil.

Yeah, I put synthetic in my car... and while I guess it did a good job of cleaning up the deposits, cause mine started leaking from the oil pump, oil pan, cam plug, and distributor plug

Right now, I'm using 5w30, which is pretty good, but it still squirts out somewhere at about 6K :squint: not sure where it's coming from, though... I'll figure it out eventually

I've got 97k on my 1995 gsr. My acura mechanic told me to use a thicker oil for higher mileage engines. You might lose a little hp, but its better than losing your engine.

I have about 108K miles on my 98, been using 5-30 mobil 1 since about 15K, it is tights as a drum, no leaks. Syn oil is a little slipperyer, more slippery, so it maybe gets by seals easier. Run 20-50 in the bug, dino oil only. Dino juice has a higher specific heat than synthetic apparently, and in an air cooled motor, that is a big deal

If higher-mileage car has been running dino oil for a while, then sometimes a switch to synthetic can cause it to start leaking.

With that kind of mileage and an unsure maintenance history, I would run Valvoline MaxLife.
