well at least the found it - those trouble shooting charts are daunting to look at, but very important to use in diagnosing rogue problems.

how much was that switch? sounds pricey.

The switch is about $180 installed.

I spoke too soon. The problem with the fan coming on is still here. Over $500 total spent over the years, a week in the shop, different mechanics, and this has become the unfixable problem.

I guess I will just have to go back to removing the a/c fuse.

Sigh.

If you know how to use a multi-meter, you can try checking some of the wiring yourself. Some shops over look the little things.

Good suggestion. I brought it back to the shop and luckily the condition occurred on his property. He says he thinks it was a problem with a wire that would move when the car was in motion. Thanks for the suggestion.

those problems tend to be tricky and costly. its real difficult to diagnose without the car in front of us, i hope we could help more in the future.

Help! I am having the same problem. I recently did a google search and found this thread. I am experiencing the same symptoms. I just changed out the a/c fan relay and nothing. Please let me know if you found out anything!

The main thing I learned was to take it to the mechanic when the condition was happening, that is bring it in when the fan wouldn't shut off. In my situation the condition only happened ocassionally so when I brought it in the mechanics were only guessing at the condition and ended up replacing a lot of things (for a lot of money) that were probably OK. The last time I brought it in with the fan on, the mechanic was able to fix it. He didn't go into great detail about the cause (something about a problem with a wire), and I didn't press him.

I've got the same issue with my "new" 91 LS. Since the AC doesn't yet work, I've just pulled the condenser fan fuse for now. Before that, I could repeatedly turn the switch on and off and eventually it would shut off. I'll have to try to run down the problem whenever I get into repairing the AC.
