Default Camshaft seal-

90 Teg:
I wasn't sure how to replace the cam seal, so I pulled the old brittle one out (very hard since obviously this isn't the way to do it). Do I have to take off the valve cover and rocker assembly to replace this? My replacement is a stock one. I just did the valve gasket and really didn't want to replace it again if I don't have to.
Or can I just cut the inner lip off and hold the seal in using a strap or cover plate held on with the two tapped holes next to it? At least until I have to remove the valve cover again for an adjustment.

What???

Yes, you must take off the valve cover in order to replace the cam seal.
It's only 8 bolts...

You don't need to replace the valve cover gasket everytime you take it off.
Hell, I haven't replaced mine in years and I just rebuilt my motor.
Of course, I clean it and check for cracks, etc before I re-use it.

Do it the right way and don't try and hold in the seal with a strap...
This would be more work than simply following the directions anyway...
