Default S.D. / Orange County Honda Engine Builders

I will be having a B18C1 GSR shortblock rebuilt to be good to 300 crank HP. I will be making it a true LS VTEC, but the internals will be hidden in the B18C1 GSR block. I will be using an OEM LS crank, Eagle LS rods, and JE 10.0:1 81.5mm GSR pistons. This motor will need to last for at least 100,000 miles. It will not be constantly raced, and must pass California smog. This car is purely a daily driven performance street machine and nothing else.

So far I have researched 4 machine shops/builders in the S.D. and Orange County areas:
- B Series - Scott Iveson / San Marcos, CA.
- Group 5 motorsports - Kevin Anderson / San Diego, CA.
- Laskey Racing / Anaheim, CA.
- Ed Hale Machine / Lakeside, CA.

Out of the above, the labor for the full machining, boring and honing, balancing, ACL or OEM bearings, and assembly will run $700-$800. Does anyone out there have any positive or negative feedback about these shops?

Does anyone have recommendations for other builders in S.D. or Orange County?

Not to be a honda-tech sackrider or anything but Laskey Racing has a great reputation and they know their stuff. I have talked to Earl before (when he was still alive ) and he is a very knowledgable and friendly guy.

Ok, I just replied to your other thread. I see your having the engine built up by a shop, so you can disregard half of that.

whats the rest of your set-up, only because if your just doing the block to those specs, you not going to get 300 crank hp. i'm also building that same motor (jdm Type R pistons .25 overbore, CR 11.8:1 to 12.01:1). are you also rebuilding the head, FI, nos, ecu programming, etc. etc. etc. i'm not saying it can't be done, but if it's NA, its going to be tough!!!

I'm not saying that I want to get 300 crank HP, but just that the motor should be good to 300 crank HP. Ideally, I will look for 200-220 crank HP, or about 170-185 WHP with an N/A setup. I may put a 6 psi Jackson Supercharger on to get 260 crank HP or 220-230 WHP.

I currently have a full GSR setup with GSR internals and OEM 10.0:1 compression, P&P GSR head, Type R valvetrain, OEM cams, OEM ECU, Comptech header, Magnaflow high flow cat, Greddy catback exhaust, and full intake.

The builder I previously went to didn't do the bottom end correctly. He gave me too much piston to cylinder wall clearance. I'm consuming excessive oil, the pistons are super noisy at idle and low RPM loads, and there is excess tailpipe emissions. I failed the smog ref twice due to high HC numbers. I changed the cat to an OEM one, and BARELY passed on HC on the 3rd atttempt. No problems with my tuning or plugs either.

So I will yank my motor and redo the bottom end as I described above. My GSR head is working good.

+3 for laskey racing

ordered a few parts from them for a friend and earl (rip earl ) was a great guy to deal with. he gave me great advice on my future build and took the time to answer all of my questions. his son mike is carrying on the great customer service.

+ 4 Laskey

I do not live in CA, therefor i have no first hand experience with them, but...

They have a superior reputation , when it comes to Honda's. I had the opportunity to talk on the phone with Earl, and he is /was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. According to HT, nothing has changed.
