whats all the fuss about b20 swaps lately? i can see that its slightly larger displacement might make some more grunt down lower in the powerband, but being that its made for use in an suv wouldnt it not make as much in the top end? isnt the b18b a better motor for a sports car by comparison?

that is kind of my whole situation. the b20b makes 126 hp @ 5400 rpm and 133trq @ 4300 rpms and the b18b makes 142hp @ 6300rpms and 126 trq @ 5200rpms. i am wondering if i am really going to gain anything here. i mean 6 ftlbs more but at a lower rpm and 16 less hp. see eventually i will build the motor for boost, so hopefully i am making the right decision. anyone here have an objective opinion???

B20s don't like boost very much. Atleast on stock sleeves anyways.

The B20Z makes 146hp @ 6400rpm. If you're going to build the motor for a decent amount of boost, I'd just get your LS resleeved and bore it to 84mm for a 2 liter.

Sure they do, you just have to tune them correctly. There are always going to be people that blow motors and try and blame it on something...almost every time it's because of the tune.

Okay let me rephrase that then. They are harder to tune reliably with stock sleeves.

i am looking at a b20b right now not a b20z. this is basically a replacement motor for the b18b i have now because of fried rings and valves. i will still have the b18 so i may just keep it and build it while the b20b is in the bay. this is just the cheapest alternative i have right now. i found the motor complete for a little more than $500. that is cheaper than a stock rebuild kit fo rthe b18. i was thinking about just building the b20 but since i get to keep my blown b18 ill probably just build that and use the b20 as the work horse for the time being. i do plan to build one of them most likely the b18 to push about 500-600whp. and i do know that increasing the bore on a b18 to 84-84.5mm will stroke it up to a 2.0l and give a better rod ratio for higher revs. i am just going to have to do a bunch more research before i start the build.

you need the right side bracket with the two studs from a 94-01 b18 engine to put onto the b20.
i did the swap about 2 months ago, its pretty straight forward.
