Default JDM b18c Transplant...

Okay, so the guys at honda tell me my car has a bad rod/rod bearing. Ive decided to go ahead and buy a complete engine. Im looking at a JDM B18C from hmotorsonline.com - even though I usually think that JDM = Worst bang for your buck. There telling me that they have one in stock, and available to my door within 2 weeks with under 35,000 miles. My question is, does anybody have any experience with Hmotorsonline? Any reason not to order from them? Or any suggestions to a more reputable online dealer? In my area there isn't too many shops that know honda's, so i'm doing the install myself. Im planning on using the included OBD1 ecu in combination with my stock 01 GSR Harness. Im also hoping to get the LSD, a new clutch/flywheel, water pump, & timing belt. My long term goals are to run some type of turbo setup. I was thinking of just keeping my current engine for a build in the future. Suggestions?? Thanks in advance....

No, the B18C (SiR-G) is the Japan version of the american b18c1 (GS-R) motor. I believe the only difference is 10:6 compression on the JDM version, as USDM b18c1 has 10:1. BTW i forgot to state that ill use the obd2 harness -> obd1 ECU convertor.... HMotors online sells the LSD for $300, and some places say the complete engine & tranny comes with LSD. Not sure if this is correct info though. Some websites are very misleading....

How many miles are on the current engine? What are the symptoms of the alleged bad rod bearing?

Personally, I would fix the rod bearing since the motor is relatively new instead of spending more on another engine.

If you are going to be doing a turbo setup in the future, 10.6:1 compression ratio will not be your friend if you plan on keeping the internals stock.

listen to the ostrich. he knows.

by the way, just do a search for hmotorsonline here and on honda-tech. i've read several threads recently from people with various experiences. somehow, the idea of buying an engine mail-order just plain makes me nervous.

If your long term goal is to run a turbo set-up don't buy a whole new motor, thats a waste of money. just buy forge pistons and rods for you gsr, so that way when you're ready to do the turbo you can run 20 to 30 psi no problems. not to mention those would be cheaper to replace and put you a hell of a lot closer to buying your turbo kit!!

Yeah, you C/R is going to need to be around 9:1 if you want high boost!!

the best advice on turboing a teg comes from das schmoo! primetime is right in saying if you wanna run high boost on a semi modified engine(ie maybe some pistons and rods) you will need a lower C/R, but if you're really looking to sink some money into the engine you can easily keep a higher C/R, but not over type-r stock set up in my opinion. i mean i know a few guys in my hometown that run 8lbs on a completely stock gsr for their daily drivers and one of thems had it for about 3 years now and only normal wear n tear, but he also is a master at tuning and that thing is fun!

Wow... Thanks for all the responses...

Info: 2001 GSR with 68K, Theft Recovery... <-- I know i screwed up here

My original intention was to have a second block/motor to build up, while I have a decent engine in the car. However, im convinced not to take this route.

Ive done significant research on building the GSR motor, my only concern is the open deck design in combination with boost. Im not too fond of boosting until timing is 100% right. I deffinately dont want to send my block out & sleeve it due to increased downtime. Im also sure i don't want any type of increased displacement involving storker kits or boring without sleeves. How can i expect my engine to run n/a on 9:1 compression? Any suggestions or experience with pistons/rods? suggestions on retailers?

I Was thinking mabye JE pistons, eagle rods, GSR oem barings & oem crank. Will probably go with Chrome or Uberdata & a ROM burner because im an IT major and would enjoy using my computer to tune. Thanks again!
