Default Really Bad Oil Comsumption

Hey all.

I got a 2000 Integra GSR that was burning a lot of oil. I took it to dealership and they said I had a bent valve. My compression in my #2 was like 140 I ended up having a local acuara shop do a complete valve job. Got it back and it ran MUCH better. The compression was 190ish in all 4 cyclinders. The next day I noticed oil all over the engine. I took it back and they found that one of the CAM seals wasnt in right. They fixed that and changed the oil again. Two weeks later, Im low on oil. I put some in. Told the shop about it and they said bring it back in. The checked everything again and said they coudlnt see any issues. They changed the oil again and said to monitor it and let them know. Before I even got to the miliage the asked me to check it again at, I was OUT! I then had someone drive it while I followed and I noticed my car is omitting black smoke (some grey it in, not much at all) constantly! From idel to hitting the gas, black smoke. And it smells kinda sweet being in the car behind it. I called them again and mentioned how upset I was since this was spos to fix my oil comsumption. They said, well it could be your oil rings saying they checked there work three times now and didnt see anything wrong. They asked me to remove my plugs and check for oil. I did that and each plug looked brand new. No oil on the plug at all. I told them that and they said, well its probably not your oil rings after all and asked me to leave my car with them so they could drive it and monitor it them selves. I havent taken it in yet, but will be soon. As it stands the dam thing looses about 1/2qt per 100 miles!!! WTF!

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks,
DJ

Cliffnotes?

Get another opinion from someone and a leakdown test because I have a strong feeling it has to do with the piston rings or ring lands.

What would cause a bent valve besides a broken timing belt or a mechanical overrev? I think the dealership is retarded.

Downshift caused the bent valve. I then got ALL valves replaced, AND the timming belt replaced at the same time. Car has 80K in miles. The compression test when the valves were bent showed #2 in the 140's. Now there all in the 190's. All plugs look good. If rings were bad, wouldnt the plugs show this?

THANK YOU!!!!

PS: I have SEEN your CAR before! NICE RIDE!

Thanks.

I had nasty oil burning like what you are describing and my plugs were a little oily, but not liquid oil, but more of a crusty, sticky, burnt oil. They smelled a little like oil as well.

Bottom line is that the oil is going somewhere other than back in the pan. If it isn't leaking, you are burning it, and if you are burning it, there are two places it could be coming from...the head through the valves or the oil pan through the piston rings/ringlands.

Do that leakdown test to confirm where the oil is leaking into the combustion chamber from. My money is that it is coming up through the oil pan. A second opinion would help since the dealership doesn't sound like the most knowledgable people in this situation.

You mention black smoke and sweet exhaust fumes. To me that's running rich and burning coolant. If you are burning oil it will most likely be blue smoke. Yes, if you're burning oil you'll see it on the spark plugs. I would check to see if you have a external leak. 1/2 a quart per 100 miles seems to me as a small leak externally. I would check the cam seal area again, I have seen many leaks from that area even after replacing with brand new seals. The problem is not the seal, its the area around the seal that leaks, applying some silicone around the seal prior to installation will likely cure the leaking from there.
One more thing did you tell them the cause of the problem was a downshift? Giving them all important information will make it easier for a tech to diagnose your car. I'm speaking from experience.

Thank you! Yes I told them exactly what happened when I took my car in. Its going back this weekend, so I will reporting our findings. I dont see any oil leaking anywhere, but maybe it is. Thank you all for the tips and suggestions. I appreciate it.

Check your crankshaft oil seal, and your actual gasket pan as well
