How did he blow up his old trans. Are your fans and radiator functioning properly?

if it goes from hot to cold and back it could be a sensor thats loose or bad wiring... i had an f150 that did the same thing but it didnt have anything to do with the thermostat

Fans kick on? If not, bad thermostat.

i would think fans... cuz if the thermostat was stuck open... then it wouldn't be able to get the hot point... if it was stuck closed it would overheat very quickly.... possibly just an error with sensors or when the thermostat thinks it's supposed to open and close
