Default 1st gear lock out?

Hey, I was just curious...
Does a gear box spin freely when you're going, say 35 or more and shift into neutral...
Because sometimes, and only sometimes in city traffic, I can't get it into 1st gear...
let the clutch out and put it back in, slides right into 1st like buttah....

Any thoughts/opinions on this?
The car's mechanically sound, and runs fine, my clutch isn't very old, etc etc... so I was thinking maybe the actual revs of the gears might be what's denying my entry into 1st?

Yeah, I can do that too..
it's not an "Issue" per say, but it's annoying, and i'd rather it went into 1st without there being a chance of it not.. y'know?

i think the tranny stops u from going into first while moving to protect ur engine. i have to overcome some resistance to downshift into first if i dont stop all the way, then also i hear a high pitch wine when i get into the gear (clutch pushed in)

i believe that is the sound of the synchro spinning up to let you in.

it does. its a safety issue. reverse should too! but on my 87 pick up it didnt. I firgured if the cluth was in and i put it in reverse at 40 my buddy behind me would see my reverse lights and laugh........NOPE, no lock out and i ground the shit out of the gear. I hear reverse has a lock out but i dont wanna attempt it again. i know 1st does though. BUT it is possible to go from 5th to 2nd........JUST DONT DO IT!

I may be misreading the OP's question...h:

* Yes, 1st and Reverse have a lock-out mechanism.
* Downshifting into 1st at 35 mph isn't a very good idea. :run:
