Default my buddy says

Ahem...

My buddy says that since I live in california, i cannot swap my b18a stock motor and tranny cause it will not pass smog.

since i have yet to get my auto transmission fixed (reverse is bad, park is going, and neutral makes the same noise but 1/8 as loud ) if it is just the shift linkage, 'cause once in a while reverse works(ie, if i pump brakes, park on a favorable slope, spin steering wheel.), than i will just get it serviced.

but if it is not, then i have to get it fixed. and in that case i want to swap. help please. w

what can i do after a swap to manual to get my car to pass CA smog laws???

i say patch up the transmission and sell it to buy a manual.


of course you could just swap in a manual transmission, theres nothing illegal about that.

swapping for a motor isnt as bad as you think, since you have an OBD-I engine you can swap in any b18 you want. as long as it's usdm that is.

As long as the motor is from a newer car than your own, it should pass with the automatic transmission. Then again CA has a lot more smog laws than I know of so it might be different now.

This link will take you to the CARB page that lays out ALL the legal requirements for a motor swap on a pollution-controlled vehicle in California. Read it all; I've quoted the salient parts below for everyone's enrichment.

Replacement Engines
Entire engines can be replacement parts. As with any other replacement part, the engine must be identical to the original. If the replacement block or engine is obtained without emissions equipment, all the equipment from the original engine must be installed on the replacement block.
If the engine is not identical to the original then it is not a replacement part, instead it is considered an engine change.
Engine changes are a modification that must meet certain requirements to be legal (please see "Engine Changes").

Japanese Replacement Engines
Used engines imported from Japan can be used as replacement engines as long as the engine being used has been identified as functionally identical to the original engine. Please refer to the engine importers catalogue to determine if a replacement engine is legal for installation in your vehicle.

Engine Changes
Engine changes are legal as long as the following requirements are met to ensure that the change does not increase pollution from the vehicle:
- The engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle.

- The engine must be from the same type of vehicle (passenger car, light-duty truck, heavy-duty truck, etc.) based on gross vehicle weight.

- If the vehicle is a California certified vehicle then the engine must also be a California certified engine.

- All emissions control equipment must remain on the installed engine.

After an engine change, vehicles must first be inspected by a state referee station. The vehicle will be inspected to ensure that all the equipment required is in place, and vehicle will be emissions tested subject to the specifications of the installed engine.

yeah? in another thread i said automatic reverse grinded. actually its more of a groan where sometin is spinnin. sounds like teeth are too short or maybe something isnt spinning i wonder if this could be patched???


maybe a better question is, if just the transmission is swapped, will it effect smog?

Your friend is an idiot...stop listening to him. The transmission swap has nothing to do with your emissions testing. As for swapping, the engine must be the same year as or newer than the car it is going into. All USDM smog equipment must be functional, correct USDM ECU used (correct application and OBD version), no check engine lights, pass visual testing (correct CARB #'s for aftermarket parts, visual inspection of smog equipment, and the engine looks like it's been swapped correctly), and then pass the sniff test.

so is my engine gonna need a new puter cause an auto to standard swap?

in other words, what is the simplest manual transmission i can get? i want it easy to install, easy to take off when/if engine needs replacement...


or are there only 1 manual that will fit this year?

since u have a b18a im guessing u have a g2 teg? (90-93) the simplest manual tranny u can get is a cable tranny (y1 , s1 tranny) but u also need the clutch cylinders, pedal assemblies, shifter, ALL that good stuff.
