Default HELP!!! Reading dipstick and some tranny issues.

Hey Guys,

I just acquired a 1987 Acura Integra LS. It is a two-door hatchback, like most, and an automatic transmission. Wellington, as I've named him, needs his oil checked. I went to check and all I see is two holes punched in the dipstick. Right now it is in the middle of the two holes. How do I read this thing?

Wellington is also a bit cold in the morning and after I've let him sit for a while. I have to let him warm up for a few minutes, and in this time he revvs himself between 2000 and 3000 RPMs and smells strongly of gasoline. Then once he warms up he slowly drops down to 1500 RPMs, at which time he is ready to go. When I go to shift him in to R to get out the driveway he clunks and feels like he is dropping/shaking. Then down through N, another clunk but smaller, and then to D4, which brings a medium clunk. Then we're off, where he takes a few minutes to get to speed.

Now it is time to go home and park him. No more clunking, but he smells strongly of oil (like burnt, but there is no blue exhaust from the pipe or the hood). I recently had him fully serviced, oil change, fuel injectors cleaned, all of it. What does all this mean? Please help me.

top hole indicates max oil level. at the bottom hole you would add a quart to bring it back to max.

replace your ATF (auto tranny fluid) for one. you may need a new fast thermo control valve for that idle jump

the lower hole is the low line and the higher hole is the full line...u want it just below the upper hole...

as for the rpm changes some is normal the engine always runs at higher rpm and a bit richer(wich may be the extra fuel smell) when its cold...i dont know if that level of rpm change is normal forthat motor or not

that clunking in the transmission...my first recommendation would be to have the tranny flushed and a new filter and fluid put in and see if that changes..should do some good for shifting...otherewise u prolly have something internal

Also check the transmission mount.

as said early check the tranny mount and engine mounts for dealing with the clunk. also, when checking your auto tranny fluid be sure drive the car under normal throttle for 5 mins or so before you check it.

but he smells strongly of oil (like burnt
On these old ones, there could be a bunch of places for oil to come out, get hot and smell burned.

It could also be your CV boots failing and flinging grease on hot parts. I noticed that on a couple used cars I drove before buying my Integra. (Which also smells like hot burned oil)
