Default Ready for the Engine...

Aight I've figured out that ever plan I draw up gets a wrench thrown into it, but at least everything that happens is going in a correct order...

so anyways, my 01 integra gsr needs new piston rings, but I figure since I'm going that far into the block. I might as well beef it up, so I was wondering what compression pistons would be good for boost, cuz I can't seem to find forged pistons in stock compression...(if you know a place though tell me)

also what else should I go ahead and replace while I have the head off and pretty much everything accessible? I have a little over 3K to spend(was for turbo, but doesn't make sense to put a turbo on an engine that needs a rebuild) timing belt & water pump are included in that 3k as well...

How far do you want to take things? How far does your budget stretch? Are you giving up on turbocharging the motor at a later date?

If you still plan on boosting your GSR, I'd add a cylinder bore brace and ulitmately a set of Crower's turbo GSR cams.

But I'm more concerned about why you need new rings on a four-year old motor. :thinking:

well that's what my uncle and I have concluded cuz i'm burning oil at a more rapid pace now, becuase there are no leaks... I can tell you the most likely source of the problem. About 6 months ago I had put on a CAI and I was unaware of it at the time but the air filter broke apart to where it was suxing unfiltered air. It could be for a maximum of 3000 miles cuz I cleaned it every 3000 when I changed the oil... So anyways if you know any other problems I should look for...

Shit. That's not good.

Have you done a compression test across all four cylinders?
If foreign debris has entered the combustion chamber and caused that much damage, it's highly likely that you'll need to re-hone the block.

How proficient are you in rebuilding a motor? If you're spinning the wrenches your $3000 will stretch considerably further. In general, it's going to be a stretch to rebuild your motor and turbocharge it for $3K.

Assuming there's going to be some time in between the rebuild and the turbo installation, I wouldn't drop the compression ratio much below 9.5:1.
The car will feel quite sluggish on low-comp (approx. 8.5:1) pistons without forced induction.

yeah it's gonna have to be re-honed me and my uncle were planning on that while we were at it as well. He's a true mechanic and i'm an apprentice more or less... there will only be as long as it takes to gather the money for turbo, that's why i was wondering if i could find forged pistons at stock compression

but in some type r pistons theyll fit your stock bore of 81mm and will raise the compression if thats the route youre taking...my .o2

My understanding is that he needs to re-hone the block because of internal damage.

And instead of raising the stock CR, he'd like to maintain or slightly lower it with the new forged pistions. Future plans include turbocharging the motor, rather than pursuing a naturally aspirated build-up.

im in the process of rebuilding my gsr right now as well. and i am going to be turbocharging it immediatily, everything ive read recomends a lowered compression ratio something around nine to one. you can buy a set of je pistons for about 400 bucks to accomplish this...thats the route ive chosen

yeah i just don't want to have to wait for the turbo on a lower compression engine cuz it wont be as powerful

if anyone knows a place to get forged pistons in stock compression for gsr let me know! i mean i'm going to be doing all this in the next few weeks and i really like the higher compression cuz i'm gonna get the block sleeved and not too worried for after turbo...

also another question, would i have to change any fuel management to bore out my engine? And is it worth it in the long run for a build?

The block will have to be rehoned regardless of whether it is damaged or not, otherwise the new rings won't have a rough surface to seat correctly. If the damage is bad enough to catch your fingernail after honing, you will need to have the block bored out.

Any aftermarket piston company should carry forged stock compression ratio pistons for your GSR.

And yes, your fueling will change when you increase the displacement on any motor. A 2.0L GSR turbo would be a sick setup because you will have more power plus a good increase in torque.
