VTEC feels weak...
i agree.....VTEC is overrated. I just can't stand people that brag about VTEC like it's god's gift to them. I mean, let's face it....one of the biggest reasons VTEC was invented was to save gas.
I like to think of VTEC like this:
before VTEC = econo mode
in VTEC = normal mode
(and I have a b20vtec in my car
)
But back to the original question, there are a few conditions that have to be met in order for VTEC to activate (i might be missing one, so feel free to add):
1. to be going over 20km/h
2. proper Oil pressure
3. proper engine temp
4. proper RPM
Now...my question is could you feel VTEC before? or is this just something you noticed recently?
it could also be a case of you hearing too many stories about how great VTEC is and having high expectations for it and only to get disappointed.

woohoo!!! i grabbed some lamer lil ractive short ram intake tube, and it is awesome! you guys are right, with just intake i still dont hear it engage initially, but the secondaries sound killer! and it did unlock a lil more uMPH too. and as far as before vtec hits being econo mode, i dont agree, even before vtec the b18 is a pretty growly lil four banger, but with vtec on top of it, its got a lil more in the top end too. i like it, not because its cool, id rather not advertise that ive got the c1 motor, so its not like a status thing, its just an upper hand over non-vtec tegs. the only thing that gives it away on the newer ones is that lil dohc vtec tag under the right side taillight, a secret weapon...

Well, I still have the '92, runs great, pissed off lil teg, it's got the basics, the short ram intake, bigger exhaust, and a stainless rear section, so it's inhaling and exhaling just fine.
Now with the '00, its snappy, but, I swear I can run hard, right up to 8k, and i never hear or feel any difference that VTEC should make. It's no doubt the fastest teg I've owned, but to drive the '92 isn't really a drastic difference either. The gear ratios seem different, but thats about it. I was lucky with this car and got it before any kinda mods were done, so I'm not trying to hear over a pipe. Is it possible that VTEC isn't engaging? If this happens, how would i troubleshoot the VTEC system? Lemme know...
