Default Running Cold?

Hey all,

It's been cold up here in the Northeast this week(below 0 deg. F), and I've noticed my '01 GSR seems to run a bit cold, but I'm not sure because I've only had the car a couple months.

Basically I start the car in the morning, let it warm up for 20 sec. and just drive it. If I'm driving under load the car will warm up just fine. The temp guage will go up between 1/4 and 1/2 when fully heated. But as the car is warming up while I'm driving, if I stop at a red light or leave the car idling for any amount of time it will actually cool back down. I watch the temp guage go down while I stop at a light in the morning.

I also noticed this when I left the car running while I went into the coffee shop. It was fully heated when I left it idling, and then 3min later when I came back the temp guage was all the way down at the "C."

Is this how they usually run, or is there probably an issue? It doesn't seem to be a normal thermostat issue, but I could be wrong.

-Andrew

my teg does that too, when it really cold. it warms right back up when I start moving again. Im not worried about it, I think it might be accentuated by my short ram sucking in all that coldness when im just sitting there.
do you have an intake on your teg?
I have not changed my thermostat yet,so maybe it could be related but I doubt it

T stat may be sticking open or a colder one is installed. I just did mine with a normal temp one and it's really warm in the car (even at 0 degrees). Engine temp stays in the middle of the guage. Only $10 and an hour tops.

i've driven my teg in -20ºF winters many times and i've never experienced the temp gauge dropping like that while sitting. i would recommend pulling the thermostat and checking that its not stuck partially open. because that is not too healthy for the motor.

As long as the heat doesn't cool down then I dont see it being a big issue because of the fridget temperatures.

I'm pretty sure it is because of the weather too. My vented hood lets out excess heat and when going down a long hill, I'll let off the gas and just coast so I can watch my gauge get near C. And I live in S. Cali. and it will do this at almost any part of the day, depending on how steep the hill is. I wouldn't worry about it. Just be glad it's not going the other way. I've never heard of over cooling causing any damage.
