How Many.....
#3
As taken from itrca.com:
There is no good answer to how many USDM Integra Type-R's there might be. Honda has issued very little information about this and the info we do have seems to be incorrect or lacking supplementary information. We can all speculate as to the numbers for each year. We will round up and give you a best guess at the maximum number of each year there is likely to be.
1997 - 750
1998 - 1100
2000 - 1600
2001 - 1600
These numbers are based on badge numbers viewed by us here. If you have a badge number on a United States Type-R that exceeds these numbers please email us so we can modify our numbers.

The bottom line is that we really don't know for an absolute certainty.
Ken (nsxtasy) thinks he has a pretty good idea, based on documentation provided by a former employee of Acura NA. Some of us think that employee was just wrong and his figures are too low.

U.S. sales:
1997: 318
1998: 1,023
2000: 1,347
2001: 1,157
TOTAL: 3,845
George just refuses to believe anything, even when it's published on American Honda letterhead. You can read more about where these numbers come from (and about the silly reasons why Stubborn George claims he refuses to believe them) in this previous topic.

I believe the numbers from the Acura person are wrong. How does it explain gaps in serial numbers? There are two views in this matter - one believes the Acura numbers are correct and the second believes there is more to this story than we will ever know about. Rest assured the Integra Type R will remain one of the best things Honda did for their racing programs.

Serial numbers are assigned sequentially for all Integras in the US market, so ITRs are interspersed with all other numbers.
As for the armrest numbers... what about them? Yes, there are major gaps in the armrest numbers - for example, there are none for 1997 in the 400's, but there are a few in the low 500's. Why? They skipped a bunch. No one ever claimed that the armrest numbers are assigned sequentially. Heck, there are armrest numbers higher than 4000 in Europe, but we all know that there are far fewer ITRs running around Europe than there are in North America.
Go ahead and believe whatever you want... In the meantime, the numbers provided by Acura (the people who work for the company that made and sold the cars) are consistent with numbers mentioned in the press, and with all observable empirical evidence (such as numbers in the registry when you account for the gaps in armrest numbers, and distribution of colors at ITR Expos, just to name a couple of sources).
