1991 B18A1 Integra LS MT
I just bought this car for $800 USD, and it is currently nt running. It keeps backfiring through the intake, I was told that the timing has slipped. When I checked the timing belt looked new and I think the idiots just put the belt on and expected it sto start. So I placed the cam gear arrows facing each other, but now the only problem is I don't know how to line up the crank pulley. There is a spot with 3 marks and ten another with 1 mark. I just need to know which one is supposed to point up.
Oh, and when it turns over it sounds like it's spinning very quickly

My sparkplugs were forced into the head b4 i bought the car, not knowing this i tried to change them out and when i did two of them broke. I am now trying to find a replacement head for the engine. I don't plan on buying a new engine unless i find out that this one is infact no good.
Hi folks.
Since there were 2 threads pertaining to the same problems on the same vehicle, I've merged them -- in order to keep things organized.
As you were.
------
Timing issue:
The crank pulley ought to be oriented so the mark on the middle section of the timing cover is aligned with the white mark on the pulley.
If the guys who changed the belt didn't even bother to reset the timing, then I'd worry about the condition of the water pump and tensioner. If the tensioner fails or the pump seizes, then the timing belt will fail and you'll be fuxored. Unless you have material evidence to the contrary, I'd replace the tensioner and pump as well.
Sparkplugs:
How far were you able to unscrew the plugs before they snapped? In most cases, a good machine shop should be able to drill out the snapped plug and if needed, insert a Heli-Coil to repair the damage to the threads. I had a similar problem with my GTi a few years back, and the whole repair cost less than $150. (I did have to remove and reinstall the head, but it wasn't too bad..)
So best of luck, be conservative and thorough...and presuming you're getting good compression numbers, your B18A1 will run strong for quite a long time.
 Oh, and welcome to HAN.
