Default Flywheels...

I want to lighten my flywheel. Is it safe to have my stock GSR flywheel lightened at a machine shop while i get the clutch done?

DO NOT machine it less than 14 lbs otherwise you risk it shattering and getting your legs and nuts cut up by shrapnel.

i plan on gettin an ITR flywheel for my LS because its not too light that i'll want to rip my hair out in traffic, and not to heavy like my LS

Smurf,
I am getting ready to replace my clutch/flywheel in my GSR. I initially ordered the chromoly Comptech flywheel but it was on backorder so I was sent the aluminum one instead. Should I wait or install the aluminum one? Which of the Comptech flywheels do you prefer? The 6.75lbs or the 8.75lbs. My teg is used as a daily driver (a lot of stop and traffic).
Thanks,
pbh

Go for the lightest flywheel possible...lighter is better, always.

The aluminum vs chromoly debate is an internet overstatement. Chromoly is stronger, but if that strength isnt necessary for the task at hand, then whats the point? I'd love to use a chromoly pen also, but its pointless.

The Comptech alum flywheel is nice, but honestly it is a bit overpriced. I prefer Fidanza's 7lb flywheel...cheap, effective, light and durable. If you want the Comptech, it still is a very nice flywheel. Id keep it...the aluminum is more expensive if I remember right anyway.

Its not uncomfortable for the street...it just revs faster. There is no loss of low-end power or anything like that, its all a myth. It just revs faster, thats it. So when starting, you have to get used to the quicker revs. Thats it.

In terms of flywheels...dont buy the hype. Lighter is better!

Well, I wouldn't necessarily say lighter is better, by lowering the rotational intertia your engine will rev faster, and you'll have slightly improved acceleration, but on the other hand your engine will also drop revs much more quickly and driveability suffers

I have a Clutchmasters Stage 1 and 7.5 lbs flywheel, and it is not bad in traffic at all. Feels just like stock. 7.5 lbs is totally OK for the street.

TIP: avoid Toda's flywheel. The teeth on the flywheel will not mesh nicely to the starter's teeth. Therefore it will take 2-3 cranks to start the car. A machine shop can cut the teeth to mesh better but why bother going thru that in the first place?

I love my 7lb fidanza, didn't suffer any loss of driveability
Sure it drops faster when you shift, but I shift really fast when I'm racing so it doesn't bother me at all.
