Default drivetrain whine

Hey guys...I've got a question. I have a '94 GSR and I am hearing a kind of "drivetrain whine" (best i can do to describe it) at lower speeds, that seems to increase with my speed. Like especially if i am driving around in a parking lot or something i can hear it when i slowly accelerate. I ran my car kinda hard yesterday and now I am noticing it. I am not sure if the sound was there before yesterday or not. It's not really loud or anything but you can hear like when you have the stereo off and stuff. Is this something I should really check out or am i just being paranoid...Any ideas?

my GSR does the same thing. especially cruising on the highway in 5th - really noticeable. but it hasn't given me any problems.

best i can recommend is to check the level, or even replace, the trans fluid

Ok, so i just found out that when i push the clutch all the way in, the sound stops. Possible pressure plate problems or what? Any ideas other than just tranny fluid, or could i really just be low on tranny fluid and thats it?

I would replace your tranny fluid. Does the sound continue while you are coasting with the clutch in?

do this test...

accelerate hard, and while doing so quickly engage & disengage the clutch (still on the gas) if the clutch doesn't grab w/in a few milliseconds of disengaging, it's burning - it's dead.

Ok so i did what you said, and the clutch is definitely grabbing just fine so my clutch is still ok...So what else could it be? Could the timing belt be making the noise? I just had it replaced like less than 3 weeks ago.

Is the whine's pitch dependant on engine speed or vehicle speed, or is it constant?

It is dependent on the vehicle speed...The noise will increase in speed when the car is accelerating. It is a kind of strange "windup noise" (not like reverse gear though)

Ok, so I just got back from the shop where I get my car work done, and the guy up there thinks it's just making that noise because it's probably low on transmission fluid...Do you think that that's all it might be?

just change the tranny fluid. every gs-r i have been in whines(and i work at a dealership, so thats quite a few).

its due to the design of the gear teeth in the transmission. they do not have an extreme helical cut to them, so they will make noise. but since they arent straight cut gears, they wont whine as loud as reverse.
