Default Exhaust Setup

Ok... i have a 4-2-1 header for my '95 RS on the way and i'm also looking to upgrade my exhaust. I know everybody says "get the cat-back", but i'm a little short on dough right now (student syndrome), so i want to be semi cost effective. If i run say 2.5" piping from the header back, and buy just a muffler to slap on the end, can i still get a deep tone or will i have to settle for the fart-can? Oh, yeah i also have a SRI. Suggestions on a muffler to buy are welcome, thanks.

Just keep saving until you can buy a good cat back. Greddy, Apexi, Skunk2, just to name a few. My .02
