I've heard mixed things about Maaco. Some folks like them, some folks don't. Basically from what I can gather is you get what you pay for there. You get a $100 package, you're gonna have to take it back within a year or maybe even less as opposed to if you get the more expensive package it's going to last a while.

I've never heard of Earl Sheib before.

EDIT: I'm in the market too for getting my car painted. It's got dints, dings, dongs, scratches, pings of all kinds of nature on it.

If you choose to take your teg to one of those place, make sure you do the prep work. They suck when it comes to masking shit off.!!

Paint it yourself, its not hard...I just painted a black honda for less then $200 in supplies (provided you have a paintgun and aircompressor). After a few hours of wetsanding, a quick buffing and wax, it looks flawless. Custom colors are a bit more expensive then your basic primary mixing colors, but it shouldn't be too bad...Its getting about the time of year that would be good for it, when there isn't a lot of dust in the air...

Don't have pics of that particular car, but I do of my Fiero that I painted really cheaply about this time last year with the same brand paint.

If you do take it to one of those places, do the masking, sanding, body work, prepping yourself, and it should turn out pretty nice. They have a a tendancy to leave some parts really thin and make wetsanding a bitch, so make sure to tell them to be sure to get it thick enough. Afterwards, like I said, wetsanding down to 1500 grit is your friend, and makes even crappy finishes look tons nicer.

Hm...If I knew how and trusted myself with painting my own car and not effing it up, I'd do it. IMO you should really know your shit so you don't waste $200 and your car ends up looking like crap and end up having to redo it in the first place.

924door,

Could you elaborate on what you used? What brand/formulation of basecoat, clearcoat etc and what steps (various grits) you took in sanding for prepwork, basecoat and clearcoat?
