Default Loud Click -- Braking in Reverse

Hey all-

On my '98 Integra LS/Auto, there's a loud clicking noise from the rear suspension when backing and braking. It sounds like someone is moderately hitting the brakes with a wrench. It'll happen in the rear, back to back after depressing the brakes (from each side), then the driver's side front will click. It does it the most after backing out of the garage, down over a cement lip/bump...then if press the brakes again, in reverse -- no problems. Then driving away, when the brakes are pressed when going forward, it will do it again, then not at all until I back-up.

Is the suspension settling with the forward and rearward force due to worn out bushings? I thought it might be the brakes, but they were replaced within the last 10K miles. I know urethane bushings will improve handling, but are expensive to install. Is this something that can wait, and what is the average cost of repair (too complicated for my garage mechanic skills ). The car has 94K miles...thanks...

Sounds like the brake pads moving from one end of the caliper to the other. They don't move much, maybe tenth of an inch or so. Just one click backward and one click forward right? I used to have an old corvette that did that, but I've never heard my integra do it. I'd call the place that did the brakes and see what they say.

When I first read your post I initially thought CV Joints, but then backed off that since it's not a constant thing while turning and whatnot either.

It could be the bushing, as you stated; but since the brakes were the last thing you changed you should start there in diagnosing your problem.

Thanks for the input -- I'll check the brake linings for excess play. My only confusion is that the drum brakes make the same sound as the disc in front. I use the parking brake often (not just for parking, but sometimes for a quick 180 if you know what I mean). Could the auto-adjusters for the drums be shot? Perhaps the problem up front sounds similar to the rear, but is different in the source. Thanks again...
