Default Help! CARB/SMOG legal I/H/E setup for my GSR

So far my car is completely stock and I have been thinking of getting an intake and/or exhaust ($ is low at the moment) for my GS-R. An important factor I'm looking aside from the power and sound, is for is the carb legal or smog legality of the parts. Can you guys give me suggestions of what products are good and also have a certificate that it comes with that shows proof?

So far I am close to making a decision on the intake, AEM Short RAM and Weapon R (Dragon or Hyper). The HKS doesn't seem to be smog legal right?

Wow, must suck having to worry about the legality of your car on the roads in CA.

Maryland is somewhat strict, but a friend of mine has an 02 Mustang GT with 3" straight pipe exhaust from the headers to the tail, and passed emissions with flying colors. Oh yeah, sounds like a shrimp-boat going by but hey, it's state-approved. Personally, I condone the use of a catalytic converter on any car that came with it from the factory.

Sorry, I am sure some people from CA will promptly respond on how to fool the system, or there might be perfect law-abiding citizens and suggest legal exhausts with the certificates for your car.

Greddy has a couple with certificates. www.greddy.com

So are the Greddy Evo and Evo 2 exhausts carb and smog legal and come with certificate?

Well, plenty of Integras here have the EVO exhaust, I'm sure someone will answer. I seem to remember my friend having to send away for his cert. when he bought the SP2 system.

CARB legality is not that big of an issue, folks. At least, not right now. h:

I'd go with your choice of the following: AEM, Greddy, Apexi, DC Sports, etc.
The certification process is arbitrary and expensive.
So to justify the investment, the brands that have CARB EO numbers (and are thus legal) are widely advertised.

It's not like the issue of CARB legality is some big secret.

Beware though, that some exhaust systems - like the Apexi N1 - may be emissions legal, but will not comply with the state's 95 decibel limit for exhaust noise.

I went with a custom system fabricated by my local shop. Flows beautifully, great exhaust note, not too loud. Passed with flying colors.

And a final note: Don't run a straight pipe and expect to pass our smog checks. It simply won't happen.

OK so I'll avoid the Apex N1s. Still awaiting the info on the Greddys, there has to be people on here that knows. While we talkin about Greddys, what the heck is the difference between Evo and Evo 2? Are they just style differences or is one just a newer model?

Evo2 I believe is fully stainless steel construction, while the original Evo has some other type of steel construction, only the muffler is stainless...

Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm almost certain that's the story.

Yep. Aluminized steel. Lighter, but can corrode.

Same difference between the SP and SP2. The SP2 is full stainless while the SP isn't.
