Default 205-50-15 vs 205-55-15 ?

I am about to get some tires for my 99GS with stock wheels. I like the Continential Extreme Contact tires. The problem is that it only comes in the 205-55-15. Has anyone use this size tires on stock wheels? Any negative effects vs the 205-50-15. I know the sidewalls will be taller. Other than that, will there be any tire rub?

i doubt it'll rub, hardly any difference. Your speedometer might be off a bit.

simply put, 205/55-15 is the wrong size. as you already know, the sidewall will be too tall. but also, speedometer will be thrown off, and you'll start recording the miles inaccurately too. you can also expect a squishier feel over 205/50-15. my advice, find a tire that you like that comes in either 195/55-15 or 205/50-15.

What's so great about these Continentals that you really want to run them in a thicker sidewall than you should? Comparable tires which are available in 205/50-15 are the Dunlop SP Sport 5000, Kumho Ecsta ASX and Michelin Pilot XGT V4.

There are much better choices in the 205-50, which fits well and is the tire the car should have come with. Your speedometer was wrong from the factory, Hondas tend to be optimistic on that, the slightly smaller tire will magnify it a bit. You will be a few mph under your indicated speed, and your odometer will rack up miles a little faster. Many choices, the michelin suggested above is NOT the OEM tire, michelin tires are really pretty good, I have never understood why the OEM tire they supply to Honda are such crap

Thanks for all the replied to my post. The reason I was looking at the Continental was it has a very good rating both in handling and durability. I was also looking at both the Dunlop sp5000 as well as the Yokohams AVS 100. My concern on these two tires are durability. I have read mixed reviews on the durability on the SP5000 and the Yokohama AVS 100. May be those of you who had used or are currently using these two tires can shed some lights to my concerns. Thanks

Now you're comparing all season tires (Continental, SP5000) with summer tires (ES100). Are you looking for a tire that will provide snow traction?

I have a 99GS sedan and put on some Dunlop SP Sport A2 (205/50/15's) on the stock rims and are very happy with them. They are a good all season tire that mixes good durability, snow traction, wet traction, and dry traction - and they are fairly cheap (about $80 - $85 a corner) - if that is what you are looking for. Keep in mind that any all season tire will not be an "MVP" performer in any one characteristic - but chances are good that they will be much better than the OEM tires.

I live in California and won't be needing any snow tires. What is the definition of a "summer tire". Does it mean it has less wet traction? I am rather confused over the differences between all season tires vs summer tires.

I was also looking at the Dunlop SP A2 tires as well. The only problem is Costco will not put on any tires that has a speed rating less than the stock tire speed rating, which is V.

The OEM Michelin are not too bad as far as handling. I don't drive my car that hard and I have not driven in the rain with them. The only compliant is the tread wear. I just bought this 99 GS and it has only 18,000 miles and the front tire treads are almost gone. I know the comprimise between traction and tread wear, but having the tread wear out at 18,000 miles is not acceptable to me.

I probably will end up with the Dunlop sp5000. I just hope it has better durability than the OEM Michelins.
