I am currently rolling on 205/50/15's (Dunlop SP SportA2's - pretty good all season tire) on stock mesh wheels (99 GS sedan). This setup works nicely IMO - but then again anything is an improvement over the Michelins.

205/55-16 would be way too tall.

If you're sticking with the stock 15" wheels you can go from the stock 195/55-15 size to 205/50-15 but that's about it.

Here's a site that lets you compare overall diameters of different tire sizes: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I have seen guys run 225/50/15 on stock 6" wheels, although it depends on the tire itself (compound, sidewall strength, actual width, etc). Also depends on what exactly you are trying to improve...ie straight line acceleration, quick response, handling characteristics, etc.

I would say 205/50 is a good general compromise with the tires that we tend to consider.

I ran 205/40-17 for a while. Not enough tire though at all. I bent two of the rims in potholes.

I'm running 205/50-15's now (Falken Azenis)

205/45R16s on my DC4. I went with Nitto NT450s at the time I purchased my rims, but I'll switch to the Toyo Proxes line when these die - while the Nitto grip levels are high, they could give better feedback and tramline a bit less IMO.
