Default G2 timing belt tention

Ok i bought my teg from a guy on this board, and he replaced the timing belt and didnt adjust the tention.

Well he told me that i should have it adjusted and i called around asking how much it would be and they are telling me that its just as hard as replacing the thing cuz you have to take everything off...

Now i also hear that there is a plug on the side of the timing cover, and you remove that, lossen the spring loaded tentioner, turn the engine over by hand a little, tighten it back up and your done...

How the hell is it done and can i do it myself without screwing anything up...

Thanks

ok i just changed my belt tensinor and adjusted valves on my car this week hehe, im sure that you can do it with out messing anything up.

pull off the driver side tire then there is a little rubber plug on the cover for the timing belt. you lossen the tensionr bolt (behind the plug) then i rocked mine back and forth a few times (not full turns just a little tug and then in the opisite direction) i had my valve cover off and the belt cover off so im not really sure how easy its gunna be to do this with those on but still might want to give it a shot :\

i have one thing to say to the guy that you got the car from. IDIOT, he was right there jessus... lol have fun

pm if you dont understand lol

What do you mean rock it back and forth? like turn the crank back and forth? Dont you only move it a few inches on the direction of the motors rotation?

Also the main concern here is if i will be able to do this without having to take the timing cover off, shouldnt i be able to get a socket though the hole where the plug is and just do it with everything else on?? The people at the dealer and at other shops tell me no, but i am wondering if they are bs'ing me cuz i can see the plug, and i am pretty sure i can get it loose lol...

I was kinda interested in taking the valve cover off to check the condition of the belt, i imation if it was to loose it may have been rubbing up againt the side of the vavle cover causing severe wear, so i just wanna check... btw is there a possibility of wear from it being to tight/loose? and how else should i check for these signs?

Thanks

Ok i think i can do this myself, but i would like to remove the timing cover to make sure that the tention doesnt move when retightening it ( i wont be able to see it if it moves when tightening it with the cover on)

Anyone give me a quick how to on how, and if the tentioner it behind the mid, or bottom timing cover?

Thanks

ok you dont turn the belt by the bolt behind that plug, ok the tensionor is set up by a spring and then you get a socket and a rachet that will fit the bolt where the pulleys and the crank meet. after lossening the tensionor then you can go counter clockwise (tells you to only do it this way) but since i had my stuff off i could tell where my pistons where and if they where top dead center so i just grabed the belt where the cam gears and pulled it slightly counter clock wise then clock wise and the spring on the tensionor will make it tighten once you can tell it is tight (dunno if you can with those covers on :\) then you tighten the tensinor bolt back up.
