Can somebody explain exactly what this does to improve performance in your vehicle. Also, is this something you can do yourself, or is it a job for the stealership? Any comments are appreciated in advance. -Ryan

You are advancing the ignition timing. YOu can do it yourself with a timing gun and a shop manual. By doing this you need to listen for knock and be sure you always run premium gasoline with no acceptions.

Are there any serious risks or drawbacks? (besides the gas)

No serious effects if you do it corrctly and listen for knock (2 marbles hitting each other is a similar sound). Use a timing gun and jump the service connector.

More power to the wheels makes me wanna go w/ a full 18 degree. What are the differences in gains between going w/ 12 degree and going w/ 18 degree?

i know the further the advance the more power will be produced. But I would also like to know the difference between 18 and 12 or 14; something lower. 18 seems a tad on the extreme on a stock motor

18 isn't extreme it is actually within factory specs.

18 degrees also won't always make more power. It woudl need to be dyno tested to be sure. There is a chance 16 degrees and 18 degrees will make the same power and one is just more advanced. No need for advanced timing that doesn't make power. Just means it is more likely to ping.
