Every Tanabe exhaust is some kind of "medallion." The one that looks like the A'PEXi N1 is the Racing Medalion. The Hyper Medallion is a more traditional muffler, not a canister design. The "Super" versions of each of these exhausts have stainless pipes, the regular versions have aluminized steel pipes.

This is the Hyper Medalion:

I'm guessing that since you're comparing it to the N1 you mean the Racing Medallion. If that's the case I can't really give much of a description because to me all canister exhausts just sound loud.

And like I said before, pretty much every cat back exhaust gives the same amount of power so all you gain by stepping to a louder exhaust (i.e. anything canister-style) is a bunch of noise.

skunk2! *snicker*

I have a skunk2 cat-back. Very nice exhaust. It is rather loud BUT with just a slight amount of throttle (like the amount needed to maintain freeway or surface street speed) it becomes almost silent. I figure it must have been tuned that way. I don't mind when it is loud though because I like the way it sounds -- very deep and throaty, not like your generic civic fartcan noise which I think sounds horrible.

The sound my car makes full throttle at 6k+ RPMS is wonderful

P.S. Some people say an exhaust like that will get attention from the police. I have had the exhaust on for 6 months and haven't been pulled over. It's really no louder than a truck with a flowmaster. If you get pulled over for your exhaust then the cop was just in a bad mood or felt like being a dick

Good info, guys and appreciated by this newbie - thanks.

Any comments on which first mod might give the best bang for my buck:
1) a nice cold air intake (maybe an AEM V2)
2) upgrade from a stock exhaust to a cat-back
3) header upgrade (say to a 4-1)

Reason I'm asking is, maybe the money I'd spend to upgrade the OEM-replacement muffler to a nicer performance cat-back would be better spent elsewhere. Factor into the equation that I need to replace my muffler regardless of whether I buy a nice one or an OEM-replacement type.

I'd wait and save up for all three. Then you can get all three installed at once and really feel the power increase over stock. I think it's better then getting them seperatly because you won't feel the increase as much.

Plenty of people install their own bolt on mods which cuts the installation costs rather significantly.

for about $975 you can get the Mugen Twin Loop  which would be my preferance which has a beautiful sound. my #2 would be the Apex-i N/A1, good power, a bit loud and not the most pricey thing in the world.

my brother has custom mandrel bent 2.5 in tubing with a magnaflow muffler. doesnt sound too bad but it does get a slight "bumble bee" sound when you take it above 5-6k. :rick:

You could clear that out with a resonator or a 2nd muffler.

I'm going to be building myself a dual muffler system soon.
