O2 Sensor and OBD2 system - Also Titled "I Crashed The Car"

Default O2 Sensor and OBD2 system - Also Titled "I Crashed The Car"

2 Quick questions.

#1 - If the O2 sensor on the manifold is bent, would it still work properly? mine is bent slightly, looks like it's prolly fubar. This is on a 96 Civic DX, all stock.

#2 - Is there a way to get the codes off the comptuer w/out buying a $500-2000 diagnostic code reader?

Car had a run in with the back of a chevy blazer. The civic lost. was my fault. sh!t happens. at least the airbags didn't deploy! anyway, now have to replace the hood, radiator stay, both headlights, the coolant resivour tank, something in the AC is blown too cause it hissed out all the refrigerant Fenders are salvagable. not bad at all. Just a little ding in each. The bumper cover could be fixed, could also be replaced. Only aftermarket parts it looks like i'll put on is the headlights, cause OEM are damn expensive. Been searching ebay for a lot of stuff. Also called the local auto parts store and they can get a primed OEM hood for $130. Not bad! Buddy who works at a shop is gonna do some price searching for me tomorrow, cause he can get stuff well below retail cost. Anyway, if anyone knows the answers to the 2 questions at the beginning of my post, let me know. Thanks!

i'd change out the O2 sensor. good chance you shattered the element.

you need a paper clip and find the diagnostic port. short the port and the codes will flash on the dash thru the CEL. if you dont know where the port is, get a manual... cuz you'll need it to decipher the code anyways.

www.oxygensensors.com has oem and universal O2 sensors for 1/3 the price of the dealership.

I know about using a paperclip or wire as a jumper, but from what i know, it only works on the older emmissions systems, the OBD 1, not the OBD2s. Called a buddy of mine who is a tech, he doesn't know because all he's used for the past 6 or 7 years is the actual OBD equipment that you plug in. He's going to check their online computer system at work tomorrow, but said that still might not give him a definite answer. Also, jumping the wrong 2 posts in that 16 pin connector blows out the dome light fuse. trust me, i found out the hard way!

It works on OBD-II cars. I don't know what 16pin connector you're talking about, but that's not the service connector you jump to retrieve ECM trouble codes.

inspyral,
i looked in the service manual, it said to use the 16 pin connector under the dash. there's actually only 5 wires going into it. I will check for a connector like the one pictured in the link you posted. hopefully i can get this problem solved. The O2 sensor definetly looks like it got damaged, but i never work as a parts replacer, ie -replacing everything til i stumble upon the problem. i guess i've been "lucky" in the past that every car before this that i've ever owned has been a 91 or older, less computer crap to deal with. gotta get this sorted out!

on the bright side, i just bought a pair of headlights on ebay. the JDM style ones with the dull black in them. Hopefully my buddy at the shop can pull through and get me a primered OEM hood and radiator stay for the prices he quoted me earlier ($80 and $30) w/out expensive shipping charges. he's checking into that tomorrow for me. Guess it's good to have friends with the connections i always need!

Found it, wasn't a fun endevor. The 16 pin connector i was referring to is the one on the left side of the dash by the fuse box cover. That 16 pin connecter can be used if you have one of those nice OBD testers. It plugs right in and spits the codes out for you on your tester. Now the connecter i just had to jump.....

That thing was so buried in there i had to actually unbolt the computer to get to it. When you look in the service manual, they make it look like it's right there in the front of the panel. It's NOT on my car. it is shoved up in there hiding and quite torture to get to. anyway, got a code 41, O2 sensor circuit fault. i'm not even going to try to do further testing, because considering it's slightly bent condition, it's not going to spit out any voltages for me, or else i would've gotten the low voltage or high voltage codes. And to be sure.....i reset the computer by pulling the fuse, waited a few minutes, inserted the fuse, started up the car, ran it for 5 minutes, turned it off, jumped the connector, ran the codes. Thanks for the help guys. Already ordered the O2 sensor as well from that place that drift posted. thanks a lot!
