Default exhaust tone is indicative of performance?

I was wondering if the exhaust tone sounds better when the car is in better shape or not. Well I started noticing my car was feeling sluggish and it made lots of sound even at every speed, kinda ricer like. well I then adjustable my car gear advanced another degree, I upped fuel octane from 87 to 89, and advanced timing about 2-4 degrees. My car sounded a whole lot quieter at low speed and sounds sweet at full throttle and it seems to have picked up some more power overall, torque kicks in earlier as well.

So my question is... is it the tuning that makes the tone of the exhaust or does it not have any influence on it?

So what you're saying is that you, not on a dyno and with no tuner's advice, adjusted timing on a SOHC and now you think you're making more power and torque?

may i ask why you were running 87 octane anyways? changing that alone probably made the motor run a little better. also, the "tone" of the exhaust is only relevent from the muffler. if something is wrong with the motor itself, the motor will let you know. trust me.

I did my usual 0-60 run same time same 60mph road as usual and I hit 60 about 10 feet earlier than usual... I put small marks on the road... I call it street tuning.

i've used midgrade and premium in my '98 auto ex since it came off the lot. would it make it any better if he had a 5 speed ex? would that call for an upgrade in fuel ratings? that's just like the store brand vs mobil 1(or any name brand) oil debate. what brand of oil do you use? i almost guarantee it's not store brand..because you'll probably say it doesn't have all of the positives or proven test results like the name brand oil.

so, why should someone stick to using the lowest grade octane available at the pump? spending an extra $0.10/gallon isn't gonna hurt anyone. on a completely empty tank of gas, that amounts to what...$1.10?

let the guy do what he thinks is helping him. your comments are not answering what he is asking.

The only benefit you're receiving is the additives that will help keep your injectors from gumming up. A higher octane fuel, if you don't have the compression that requires it, will give you no more power and you're just wasting your money.

Bad analogy. Buying premium when your car only needs regular is like buying 20w50 oil when your car says it needs 5w30. It isn't higher quality, its designed for a different purpose/engine.
