Default exhaust tone is indicative of performance?

I was wondering if the exhaust tone sounds better when the car is in better shape or not. Well I started noticing my car was feeling sluggish and it made lots of sound even at every speed, kinda ricer like. well I then adjustable my car gear advanced another degree, I upped fuel octane from 87 to 89, and advanced timing about 2-4 degrees. My car sounded a whole lot quieter at low speed and sounds sweet at full throttle and it seems to have picked up some more power overall, torque kicks in earlier as well.

So my question is... is it the tuning that makes the tone of the exhaust or does it not have any influence on it?
