Default Exhaust backpressure ? good or bad ??

I was gonna buy the DC SPort TCS Exhaust, but then i read that it produces a lot of backpressure. Now I always thought that Backpressure was bad. But i guess maybe not. Does anyone know what backpressure is good for ? and is this exhaust any good?

Likewise... I would like to have the concept of backpressure explained too. Thanks...

During the exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve opens at the beginning of the exhaust stroke, and then the piston pushes the exhaust gases out of the cylinder. If there is any amount of resistance that the piston has to push against to force the exhaust gases out, power is wasted. Using two exhaust valves rather than one improves the flow by making the hole that the exhaust gases travel through larger. In a normal engine, once the exhaust gases exit the cylinder they end up in the exhaust manifold. In a four-cylinder or eight-cylinder engine, there are four cylinders using the same manifold. From the manifold, the exhaust gases flow into one pipe toward the catalytic converter and the muffler. It turns out that the manifold can be an important source of back pressure because exhaust gases from one cylinder build up pressure in the manifold that affects the next cylinder that uses the manifold. The resistance to the expulsion of exhaust gasses in the engine is called back pressure.

Back pressure is never good but is hard to avoid. It takes a book to explain it all. "Scientific Design of Exhaust and Intake Systems" by Smith and Morrison.

1stGen's Super Short and Skinny version: You want the lowest back pressure you can manage with the highest exhuast velocity possible to acheive a balance. Back pressure will be unavoidable, but should be minimized, and use of some form of exhaust header or manifold is a necessity to prevent possible valve damage.

OK, thats kinda what i thought too, but then my question is why does DC Sport put out a Exhaust system that produces backpressure ??? I guess it must be good for something. r there any cases where back pressure is actually needed ?

Higher back pressure systems are typically quieter, that's all.

I'm not going to pretend I know what I'm talking about, maybe I'm a clubsi.com ricer, but I was under the assumption that you need some backpressure to keep exhaust velocity up. Otherwise people would all be using 5" exhaust piping right?
