1stGen's Super Short and Skinny version: You want the lowest back pressure you can manage with the highest exhuast velocity possible to acheive a balance. Back pressure will be unavoidable, but should be minimized, and use of some form of exhaust header or manifold is a necessity to prevent possible valve damage.
