D16Y8 Supercharge vs. K20
I have a 96 Civic EX coupe with the D16Y8 engine. I wanted to supercharge it with a Jackson Racing blower until my brother recommended a k20 motor swap. I did some research and found that the blower would give about 142hp and the k20 motor 200hp stock. Of course im looking for more power for less money and they both should cost about $2000+. So does anyone recommend either of these options.
Unless you have a good deal of mechanical experience, I'd go with the JRSC. The K20 swap is not a quick-and-easy thing.
Buy a greddy turbo kit. It's cheaper than the JRSC and much more flexible.

but to answer your question.....k20 or a supercharged d16.................go with the k20.
if you start wondering about the turbo....go to www.turbod16.com and download some of the videos there. a stock d16y8 with 9 psi... making like 186 whp, and 170 ft lbs of torque, and that would probably cost the same or less than the supercharger, and definetly less than the k20.

A stock d16 can handle about 220whp with a turbo, and close to 400whp with rods and pistons.
I considered the turbo before (might go with it now) but realized that the D16y8 is not really a good motor to build off of. So I guess the supercharger is outta the question, but now which is better - K20a swap ( yes i have the experience) or the turbo setup?? Also I saw the $850 turbo kits on eBay and assumed they are low quality - would anyone recommend those?

IMO I would never buy any e-bay "kit" unless it was a known mane brand such as revhard, drag, or greddy (although I'd never buy a greddy kit, power output is to minimal for my taste)...
You can build your own kit for less money then a k20 swap and still beat it (performance wise) the d16 is a great motor to turbo and makes good number in stock form.
Don't get me wrong, the k20 swap in the eg looks awesome and performs great, but the cost per reward is kind of out of balance IMO. If you want maximum performance with a stock motor then the k20 is your engine. If your looking maximum performance with a modified engine then a boosted d16 is your best bet.
I can tell you from experience, the k20 swap is a pain in the ass. Sure they make swap kits, but it's still a pain in the ass to get everything to fit correctly...it's still not a bolt-in swap....it's takes some work still
