Default Some newbie questions....(miles, gas, etc)

First off, I just got a 05 Type S, silver on black. I have some questions.

Gas- Is it a good idea to let it get close to empty and then fill up or fill up at half a tank? Is it a good idea to mix new gas with old gas?

Break-in - Dealer told me 1500 miles, i have people telling me 1000, people telling me to beat it like i stole it out of the box. Whats the proper way? I have 400 miles on it right now, shift at 3000 rpms and keep it under 60 on the highway.

Oil changes - Dealer told me 10,000 miles, im used to changeing oil every 2500-3000 miles. Is it safe till 10,000 miles?

Any other useful info would be great also. Thanks for the help in advance.

it's koo to run to near empty since your gas sump the thing that sucks up the gas is on the bottom, so it's always taking gas from the bottom any ways

old gas/new gas/ same gas....know wut i mean...

breaking in the car, i'd do what dealer suggests or resort to ur owners manual

changing the oil again do what the maual says,

In a car that new, it's not going to matter. If you can afford for the tank to get quite low every time before you fill up, and you intend to keep the car for a long time, you will avoid the sludge buildup and water accumulation in the tank that is the reason that many old timers will tell you not to let the tank get low.

There are two ways to break in a Honda motor. If you want the motor to last forever, like the typical Honda motor, do what the dealer said.

You can get a couple of horses out of the motor by beating it from the very beginning, but you will shorten the life expectancy of the motor by an unknown mileage. Most of us would think it's not worth it, and would do what the dealer says.

Oil changes - Dealer told me 10,000 miles, im used to changeing oil every 2500-3000 miles. Is it safe till 10,000 miles?
Although badly informed mechanics and even service supervisors will deny this, Honda/Acura does use a break in oil. This is verified by reliable information out of Torrance, and I don't care what your mechanic says to the contrary.

Because they are deliberately wearing the motor by using this oil and recommending specific driving techniques for a specific mileage, I would recommend you leave the break in oil in the car for the mileage specified in the manual. Leave it in at least 5,000 miles if you can't resist changing it early.

My only caveat is that you watch the oil consumption closely while the motor is new. K motors will often use quite a bit of oil while they're breaking in for the first few thousand miles, often for the first few oil changes.

My K20A3 was like that. It used oil at an alarming rate, almost outside the warranty specs, for the first couple of oil changes...the dealer even had to add oil while it was in the break in oil cycle.

However, now it uses no oil at all between its 5,000 mile changes.

i was super anal when i had my 2000 Si, changed the oil every 2000-2500 miles. So, going 5000 miles is fine between changes, even the first oil change???

Thanks again for the helpful info.

Yes, especially the first oil change. Unless you have a reason to follow the extreme duty schedule, you might want to go even longer on the first change.

Remember to check the oil level frequently, however. I'm serious about the oil consumption. You will be surprised how much a K motor can use in the beginning, especially coming from your B motor '00 Si.

sounds good to me, i was always under the impression that you do your first oil change after the break-in period, the first 1500-2000 or so. Less oil changes means less money, thats good for my pocket.

Didn't you notice unusual oil consumption in the beginning?

Its weird with this oil thing, 5000, 10,000, etc. you dont know anymore. My fathers 96 Civic Hatch has 150,xxx miles on it and all he does is change oil every 2000 miles. The car runs like a champ, no problems at all.

Ill do the first change around 5000 or so, if it burns enough oil, ill do it at that time. As long as its good for the car, its good for me.
