Brake Problems
Hello all,
Just need some advice before I attempt to go to the con-artists (mechanics) and get my car fixed. My rear brakes are squealin like a mofo. I think its about time for new brake pads. I was curious if I needed to get my rotors turned while I am putting on my brakes? Also how much should it cost for my car to get the rotors turned and new brake pads installed? I got quoted 140 bucks today.
Would it be cheaper for me to go ahead and buy my own brake pads and take them to a mechanic and have them slap it on or would it be cheaper for me to just let th emechanic put it all on. I would put my brake pads on myself but I live in a crummy ass apartment complex and i dont have the tools to put on my brake pads.
Any assistance before I go deal with these mechanics would be great,

I think you should just let the mechanic do it for you for $140, because you probably will only ended saving very little money, because labor is expensive.
I am a newbie, brakes are too important to one's car.. if you fu#@ed it, then your life is in risk. but if you know what you doing. go right ahead.

If you want the cheap shit the mechanics use, you can do the job for $30. Probably $15 for pads and $15 to turn the rotors at your local machine shop.
Ideally, you want new pads to bed with new rotors....although IMO, it isnt the biggest deal in the world. Take a look at your rotors, see if they have any grooves in them and if theyre in good condition (which they may not be if the wear indicator on the pad has been making contact for a while). If theyre ok, dont worry about resurfacing them, just slap some pads on and call it a day. If you want to replace them, its $20 a rotor at autozone, and use the pads of your choice. For rear pads, its not going to make much of a difference.
In terms of which is cheaper...I dont know, ask the mechanic how much hes charging for labor and parts.

wow, $140 seems steep. the shop is mostly going to replace it with some cheap $20 brake pads. if you are going to be ok with that, then go for it. but here is what i just pieced together, i just recently got my fronts done.
and labor is $50 at my local shop to put on rotors and pads.

Here is another question. I called Acura to get the price for the OEM brake pads from the dealership; cost = 63.00. I asked him if they were ceramic and he said no, they were like an organic composite. Are the 15 - 30 dollar pads that I see at Pepboys, Autozone, Discount Auto, etc, the same as the pads that come wiht the Integra? I know most of those pads are of an organic make up. I am trying to find me some pads that will last me at least 2 or so years, minus the squealing (I am used to the brake dust). I would do some searching on the site but I am at work on a SLOW AZZ computer and I am trying to get this brake job done before my rotors go to crap.
Thanks again-
Thanks again-
stew on this for a while. how much money does Honda invest in research and development on the brakes that go on Honda cars? how much money does pepboys invest on research and development on teh brakes that go on Honda cars?
$140 isn't a bad price. at the dealership i work at, it is 2.5 hours labor per axle at $85 an hour. plus parts.
and just let them install the pads, they have to take the caliper off to turn the rotor so it isnt like they have to do any more work, except put some moly-kote on the pads(30 seconds maybe?)
