Default what causes a spun rod bearing?

i think im on my second engine now with a spun rod bearing. im trying to get to the bottom of this. ive heard its caused by water getting into your block. could that be by sucking it up through your intake? what about over-reving your engine? say, if i over-reved my engine maybe twice, and then i just recently got my valves adjusted again, could that be the cause? thx in advance.

could be your low-flow cat.

oil starvation is a prime cause

eh, never starved the engine of oil. the most i did was wait a little too long to change the oil (500 or so miles)

Valve adjustment has nothing to do with it. Overreving a poor, defenseless B18B would cause it though. I hope you haven't been trying to take it over redline.

no, no. im not an idiot. i mean, taking it over redline would be entirely stupid, because the powerband would certainly drop off, and it just isnt good for the engine.

on second thought, could not having a seal around my hood, and little droplets of water coming in to my intake be causing it? ...or maybe even a faulty ecu? i know my ecu isnt stock, it could be running my engine too hard or something, im not sure.

No to all that stuff. Spun rod bearings are primarily caused by oil deprivation and/or overreving, but as the bearings wear they become more prone to break free and spin. A normal, well treated B18B is very unlikely to ever spin a rod bearing. It is a purely mechanical problem, not related to ECU programing or valve adjustments or anything of the sort... unless your ECU has had the rev limiter removed, but that's something else.

Where have these two engines come from? Were they stored without oil for a long time? How long have they lasted before the bearings took a dump, and how were they driven?
