Default temp & fuel guage died after new faces installed

I'm sure someone has seen this before. '89 Civic Si. Installed white faces on cluster and now both the fuel guage and the temp guage stay pegged at the top at all times. I took them out because I read somewhere this will damage the guages. Can someone tell me what I did wrong - or at least what to look for? Read in a forum that this happens. Thanks. Mr. Biker.

Had the problem - removed the needles. Replaced the cluster. Same problem with the second cluster. Read somewhere online that this happens when there is a short. Just wondering if anyone knows exactly where to look. Thanks for your ideas, though. M.
