agreed. My 1st gear is quirky too sometimes. It's a combination of aging synchronizers, soft shift linkage bushings, and the alignment of the stars. I can tell you, though, not to force it into gear. Just release the clutch (in neutral), press it back in, and then first gear should engage. My tranny does the same thing from time to time.

When I sit at a light with the car in neutral and shift to first to go, about 1/4-1/3 of the time, it won't go into gear. I have to double clutch. WHY DOES IT DO THIS??? It's annoying. I understand that there is a safety thing so you can't put it into first from second, but why not from neutral?
Your pressure plate is going bad, even if the clutch itself is not sliding. The same happened to my Prelude. If you go just a little (don't completelly stop), the 1st gear goes ok, not? I could not get the 1st gear only at completelly stop. After my clucth has been replaced the 1st gear goes perfectly.

A clutch that isn't operating properly will give difficult shifting in all gears, not just first.
