Low profile is in the 40 and below aspect ratio. Basically a low profile tire is one that has a very short sidewall, there isn't much other definition.

"Low profile" means that the sidewall of the tire isn't very high. A 185/60 14 tire has a 60-series sidewall. Meaning 60% of the tread width, which is 185mm is this example. I would consider 50 or less a low profile tire.

Low profiles are usually only for high performance driving.... they are VERY hard on rough surfaces for everyday driving. They also SUCK in rain, snow, anything halfway moist! If you want them on an everyday driver, I might suggest getting another set of rims, and remount them as the seasons change. Trust me.... my friend's brother has an Audi S4 with all wheel drive and a six-speed stick. He could not get up his parents driveway in the snow. Even with all wheel drive, the car just kept slipping back, spinning all fours.

I have 205/45/16's and the guy at the tire shop called them "low pro" so they must be. I wouldn't say low profile tires are necessarily poorer in the rain. I've heard the Kumho Ecsta 712's are great in the rain. But if you get a "high performance" tire or "ultra high performance" tire, then it is probably crappy in the snow. It probably has to do with the tread pattern.

I had 195/60/14 Yoko AVS-Is before, notice they're not low pro, and they were useless in the snow because they were "ultra high performance" tires. I now have Yoko A520's and I plan on getting winter tires before November.
